HRT on Long Island

Your body produces many hormones. The ones that we talk about often are thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Men and women require different levels at different ages. Not every woman during menopause or man during andropause will need hormone therapy.

Menopause

There are many symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, insomnia, headaches, difficulty losing weight, lack of muscle mass, low libido, or sexual appetite. There are many medications used for hormone replacement like tablets, sprays, gels, patches, and pellets. You will need a physical exam and blood work to determine if there is any other cause for your symptoms. Pellets were developed in 1939 for women with hysterectomies. They are the size of rice and they are inserted in the gluteus with local anesthesia. For women, the effects last about 4-5 months (3 times per year) and for men about 5-6 months (2 times per year). They will increase lean muscle, decrease fat mass, increase exercise capacity, and bone mineral density, improve libido, decrease hot flashes and you will be able to sleep better. Side effects:

  • 2-10%risk of acne and facial hair growth.
  • 1% risk of hair thinning.

These symptoms are temporary until the next dose is adjusted. Pellets are a bioidentical molecule, which means, they have the same chemical composition as the hormones produced in your body, and therefore do not increase the risk for breast cancer, coagulation events, DVT, gallbladder disease, or blood clots.
